Cool Ways You Can Use Ordinary Appliances You Didn’t Know About

Day after day, you stand in the kitchen and cook meals for yourself and your family. Unfortunately, the routine may have you hating your time in the kitchen. Fortunately, there are some unique ways you can use ordinary appliances to produce great meals and drinks.

Salmon Cooked to Perfection

Imagine trying to cook a meal and clean up the kitchen in an hour or less. It seems like an impossible task, right? Wrong. If you have a dishwasher, you can cook delicious salmon and clean your dishes all at the same time.

Note: You may want to do a test run to make sure you do not end up with soapy flavored salmon.

How: You will need salmon fillets, aluminum foil, lemon juice, butter, salt, pepper, dill and olive oil. With the shiny side of the aluminum foil facing up, apply grease using your olive oil. Place the fillets on top of the aluminum foil and season with lemon juice, butter, salt, pepper and dill. Wrap the fillets up tightly. Make sure to pinch and fold the edges in order to seal the fish within the aluminum.

Sealed edges prevent soapy water from ruining the taste of your fish. Place the aluminum wrapped salmon fillets on the top rack of your dishwasher, load your dirty dishes and turn on your dishwasher. The salmon must remain in the dishwasher through the entire wash and dry cycle. At the end of the cycle, remove the salmon, place it on a clean dish and serve your perfectly cooked meal.

Fresh Brewed Beer

Each morning you likely stumble into your kitchen and fumble for the buttons on your coffeepot. Ah, coffee, that sweet nectar that brings you to life when you're half asleep. Aside from making coffee, you can also use your coffeepot to make several delicious foods and drinks, including freshly brewed beer.

How: First, you will need to clean your coffeepot thoroughly to remove the coffee grinds. Roll 1 and ¼ cups of malted barley under a rolling pin gently in order to crack the grains. Place the grains in the coffeepot as if it were coffee grinds. Add two cups of water to the coffeepot and turn it on. Once the coffee pot finishes brewing, you will need to strain the liquid through a cheesecloth.

Place the filter containing the wet barley back into the coffeepot. Add a cup of your strained barley liquid to the pot and turn the machine on. Repeat the process four to five times, adding a cup of water each time.

Take your rich grain infused liquid and place it in a saucepan. Bring the liquid to a rolling boil and continue to boil for approximately 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you will need to add five or six hops pellets. Continue boiling for an additional 30 minutes and turn the stove off.

Stir the mixture carefully in one direction. Your mixture contains sediment that will pool into the center of the liquid when stirred. Remove sediment from the mixture carefully using a spoon. Pour the mixture into a jar, preferably a canning jar, top with a lid and place it under cold water until the liquid has cooled.

Once cooled, shake the jar vigorously to aerate your mixture. Remove the lid and cover with cheesecloth. Secure the cheesecloth in place using a rubber band to prevent contamination. Place the jar in a cool, dark place and allow it to sit for a week. After a week, you will have freshly brewed beer.
